Colette Fu’s books are unlike any other pop up books I have seen. They are a cross between a photography travel memoir and pop up extraordinaire. Not only are the photographs visually stunning, but she has managed to convert them into a photo pop up dioramas and has brought them into life, creating scenes that are rich and deep.

The techniques used for the pop ups are complex, with the scale of the pop outs being flamboyant and full. This creates a spectacle on the eyes, not knowing where to look first with the amount of content on the page to see. The use of her own photography is interesting as I have been thinking of how I plan to illustrate Jeff Noon’s work. My drawing skills are limited and I do not think I have the skills needed to give justice to his work. I am playing with the idea of mixing media and textures with predominantly digital images that I will process through software such as photoshop to give a consistent style to tie all the pages together. I think it is important for the reader/viewer to understand that these pages, that individually represent different stories, are connected together, even if they do not know that they were all short stories written by the same author.

Jeff Noon’s style of writing is chaotic and this needs to be represented visually to the reader through the style of illustrations and how the pop ups are created. A clear/clean and simple scene wouldn’t sit well with how complex his writing is. In fact, it would be easy to create one full page with just one paragraph of his work. The design of the pop ups needs to play homage to the text it represents.
